Rat and Mouse Control
Why Control Rats?
You suspect you may have a rodent problem. You may have seen one or more rats or mice in your home. Should you take steps to control them, or are they harmless. Experience has shown that rodent problems need to be controlled. Above all, rats and mice, whether dead or alive, can spread disease. They find ways to get in food and contaminate it with urine and droppings. They start fires by chewing electrical wires and destroy other valued possessions by gnawing on them. Fortunately, effective rodent control is not an impossible dream. Cooper Seeds has been in the feed business for over a century, so we have plenty of first-hand experience in rodent control. Read on for more information on the pest and how Cooper Seeds can help you achieve control.
Common Species
House Mouse, Mus musculus
House mice are small rodents with relatively large ears and small black eyes. They weigh about 1/2 ounce and usually are light gray in color. An adult is about 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches long, including the three to four inch tail.
Although house mice usually feed on cereal grains, they will eat almost anything. They are sporadic feeders, nibbling bits of food here and there.
Mice have keen senses of hearing, smell, taste and touch. They are excellent climbers and can run up any rough vertical surface. They will run horizontally along wire cables or ropes and can jump up 12 inches from the floor onto a flat surface. Mice can squeeze through openings slightly larger than 1/4 inch in diameter.
In a single year, a female may have five to ten litters of usually five or six young each. Young are born 19 to 21 days after mating, and they reach reproductive maturity in six to ten weeks. The life span of a mouse is usually nine to 12 months.
Roof Rat, Rattus rattus
The roof rat has a tail that is longer than its body, up to a length of 12-16 inches. The tail is scaly with sparse hairs all around it, and the rat has brown fur with a white belly. Roof rats can very climb well and can appear tame. They are most active at night, but if their home is destroyed, displaced rats may be seen in the open during the day.
Norway Rat, Rattus norvegicus
Norway rats are robust rodents that usually weigh about 11 ounces. Adults are 13 to 18 inches long, including a six to nine inch tail. Their fur is coarse, brownish and scattered with black hair on the upper surfaces. The belly fur is typically gray to yellowish-white, and they sport a naked, scaly tail.
Rats will eat nearly anything, but they prefer high-quality foods such as fresh grain, livestock feed, and meat. Rats require 1 fluid ounce of water daily when feeding on dry food.
Rats have keen senses of hearing, smell, taste and touch. They will climb to find food or shelter, and can gain entrance to a building through any opening larger than 1/2 inch in diameter.
Rats have litters of six to 12 young, which are born 21 to 23 days after mating. Young rats are sexually mature in about three months. Breeding occurs mostly in spring and fall. The average female has four to six litters per year. Individuals usually live 12 to 18 months.
Spotting an Infestation
The presence of rodents is usually indicated by their droppings or other evidence of their destructive gnawing. You may also be able to see their tracks on dusty surfaces. Rats' burrows may be found outside next to the building or alongside fences. House mice have a distinctive odor that alludes to their presence. Rodents are active mostly at night but may be seen occasionally during the day; one seen may just be one out of many.
Rodent Control
Sanitation
First, to prevent or begin control of a rat or mouse infestation, steps need to be taken to prevent access to food. However, rodents can survive on limited food supplies, which often necessitates further control measures.
Sanitation Tips
- Keep bird food in a feeder, rather than on the ground
- Use metal or high-grade plastic trash cans, and keep them covered
- Clean up fallen fruits and nuts outside
- Remove pet food when not in use
- Clean up pet waste often
Shelter
Stuf-Fit
STUF-FIT is a rust proof copper meshing for sealing rodent entry points. Use it in all kinds of openings to keep
out all kinds of pests. When tightly packed into a gap, crack or weep hole, the copper mesh resists being pulled out. Make exclusion work a lot easier. This is
a permanent product because it is pure copper. It's interlocked loops can't be pulled apart like steel wool. You can tack it, staple it or glue it into the
hardest to get at openings. Rolls are sold in quantities of 20 or 100 feet. Each roll is 6 inches wide, double folded.
Established rat colonies are nearly impossible to eliminate without
Rodentcides, Glue boards, Traps and the "Know How & Where" to put them.
There is really no way to prevent rodents from coming in your yards. Why? All
living things need three things. Water, food and shelter.
- Food - Rats can live on anything even
animal droppings, any fruit from bearing trees, vegetable gardens, garbage
containers, fish, stale meats, straw, green feed (wheat, oats etc. growing in
adjacent fields), around lakes and ponds. Does this means you would have to
get rid of your pets, gardens, any outside water source, fruit trees all trash
etc etc etc.. No! Follow some good advice from someone who runs a feed store
and understands their habits and simple ways to rid you and your property of
their nuisance.

- Shelter - Rats can live in or
outdoors- in walls, attics, basements and under porches. More often than not
rats will dig its own home. A rat burrow is a tunnel in which a rats
constructs its nest. Freshly dug burrows have an entrance about 2 inches wide
with a mound of soil next to the hole. Although new burrows may have only one
or two holes, established burrows often have many side tunnels and exits. The
soil and vegetation around burrows are often flattened into paths. Common
places for burrows are under sidewalks and behind steps, under shrubbery and
at building foundations.
Burrows under dense vegetation may be hard to find. It may be helpful to cut
back vegetation around trash cans and other food sources or choose plants you
can see under.
ZP Rodent Bait
is ideal to put down burrows. It takes very little for a quick kill and
pellets hold up well in adverse conditions, making them a popular choice in
moist conditions. The hardness of the pellet also satisfies the rodent's
desire to gnaw. Rodents, however, can trans. locate pellets.

Regular mowing discourages rats and may expose burrows. Piles of lumber and
other debris also provide shelter for rats, and should be removed whenever
possible. During warmer weather when vegetation and rat populations are
growing you need to check more often under plants and debris .
Remember a startled rat can be dangerous so be careful.
Water - Since it is impossible to take away all
water sources (mice gets all the moisture it needs from its food source so
bait and traps are your best weapons) it is a good chance to use another type
of bait. Liqua-Tox
for rats is inexpensive and easy to use with our fortress bait station that
comes with a container for liquid baits.
Mating - Rodents strongest URGE is breeding.
They will go after almost anything to build nest. They use plastic or paper
bags, automobile parts (hoses insulation etc.), wiring and insulation in your
homes, straw, string or rope, you name it. They are great climbers and can eat
thru almost anything to get to a breeding site (metal, wood, plastic etc.)
Rats breed all year long. A female will litter 5 times a year with as many as 12
to 18 pups in a litter and will fight to the death for their young. Rats can
become sexually active at 3 months of age. The gestation period is about 3
weeks.
Kits for Elimination
-
Non Lethal Kit For All Types Of Rodents Inside The Home

This kit comes with everything listed below -
Tip-Traps - We love these things. They work always and are inexpensive
and re-usable. Mice love to go in a trap that another mouse has been in. They
will not harm the rodent, but a great tool in riding your home of the uninvited
guests.
Cooper's 745 - I have kept the Cooper's 745 ( live trap that catches
Rats, Mice, Squirrels, Chipmunks, and small Opossums ) trap under our sink for
years in case a mouse or rat gets in some how. The main thing is trying to keep
them out by rodent proofing your home which is no easy task believe me. I am
always on guard for newly formed entry holes (by placing a bright light in our
house on a dark night and having a careful inspection all around the house
including the roof!!) . You can bait this trap with peanut butter on bread,
peanuts in the shell and sunflower seeds etc.. and if that does not work try the
best bait of all (cracklings) you find at the grocery. Save this bait as the
last resort.
Repeating Rat Trap - This Is A Wonderful Trapping Device When You Are
Over Run With Warf And Roof Rats! This is a new Type Trap that lets up to a
dozen or more full grown rats in at a time. It has a seesaw type door on both
sides that lets rats in but not out. We have new type lure that we have
developed especially for this trap. Check below. The trap you see above has 5
rats in it
Rat Lure For All Types Of Traps - This is a very effective lure we use in
our feed warehouses. We have to have something that will draw the rodents away
from our feed supply and that is very difficult when you have over 100 tons in
stock of peanuts, sunflower seeds, sweet feed, dog and cat food etc. You can use
it in the pro-ketch, 745 live trap and the repeating rat trap.

No Batteries No Mess To Clean Up Rodent Kit For Inside The Home

This kit comes with everything listed below -
Pre-Baited Glue Boards - ( Catches Rats and Mice )
These also work great inside the house. You can place them under cabinets,
appliances, almost anything and use them along walls ( rodents tend to run
against walls). Remember when placing traps the How and Where is "Everything".

- Total War on Inside Rodents

Two T Rex Snap Traps
Two Deluxe Snap Traps
Six Tip Traps
One Pro-Ketch Traps - Catches Up to 18 Mice At One Time
One 745 Trap - Catches Mice, Rats, Squirrels and Small Opossums
For Rodents Use baits Such As Peanut Butter on White Bread, Apples, Oranges,
and melon pieces plus grapes, peanuts in the shell and peanut butter mixed
with molasses spread on whole wheat bread .
Rats - Patience is a good policy when trying to use snap traps. Put out
several baited snap traps, not set for a week or so (use different kinds of
bait to see which they prefer). This will let them get accustomed to seeing
the traps in their surroundings and you will be more successful.
For Mice - The best traps are the Tip Traps and Pro Ketch.
Put away or seal up any food source (using a rodent proof container) including
pet food at night.

Rats are smarter and tend to be more cautious than mice. That's why to need to
use several different devices to catch them. Mice are more curious and usually
follow other mice in to live traps or use a trap that has just caught another
mouse.

Trapping is a great method to control rats and mice. It's probably the safest method, you always know where the rat or mouse is, and you can gauge the success of your control program. Regardless of whether you use a live trap or a snap trap, an effective bait is a must. Some baits that rodents like are peanut butter, or a small piece of hot dog, pizza or partially cooked bacon. Roof rats in particular like green apples, melons, strawberries and jam. If they stop eating, you should change the bait. If they won't eat, you have probably gotten rid of them. Place traps near walls, in dark corners and in places where rodent activity is observed. Tip: place bait in disengaged trap to non-destructively familiarize rodents with feeding at the trap.
Live Rodent Traps These traps are often more successful with capturing the rodents and are the only choice for the squeamish. We carry
three types: the Tip-Trap, a small rodent trap that tips over locking in the capture and the Cooper 745
and Repeating Rat Trap, larger cage traps that is great for indoor and outdoor use. Both traps allow you to release the capture without touching it.

Trapper T-Rex Rat Trap
Named after the fierce dinosaur, Trapper
T-REX is
Bell's most recent addition to its line of reliable traps. Professionals can now
use a safer alternative to competitor's dangerous rat snap traps. PCOs can
integrate Trapper T-Rex as a new tool for special situations, too, like chemical
free accounts.
Trapper T-REX offers superior rat capture. Patented, interlocking teeth make rat
escapes virtually impossible. The trap is a perfect combination of trigger
sensitivity and trap velocity -- speed and responsiveness ensure capture.
Extensive field and laboratory testing fine-tuned Trapper T-REX to optimum
specifications.
Safer and easier to use than competitor's snap traps, Trapper T-REX can be
readily set by foot safely on the ground. Press the trap open like a pedal,
keeping fingers free and safe.
Bell included a removable bait cup that inserts from the bottom of Trapper
T-REX. The cup can be withdrawn and re-inserted without the trap being set,
which greatly enhances safety and ease of use.
You can use Trapper T-REX along a rat pathway. Or you can insert it into a
tamper-resistant bait station. Trapper T-REX easily fits inside the Protecta bait stations.

DITRAC BLOX
For commercial use in warehouses, resturants,
and in federally inspected meat and poultry plants.
DITRAC with its active ingredient,
Diphacinone, is an excellent maintenance bait. Success with Diphacinone baits depends on rodent acceptance and repeated
feedings. Therefore, Bell manufactures DITRAC with only food-grade ingredients and enhancers for optimal rodent acceptance.
The antidote, Vitamin K1, is readily available. Due to the need for multiple feedings, bait shyness is not a problem with
DITRAC. Colored green, DITRAC can be used in federally inspected meat and poultry plants.
|
 |
Contrac® All-Weather Cake, like All-Weather BLOX, is designed for high moisture
conditions as it resists mold and rancidity. This economical bait is
manufactured in a multi-edged, scored cake that can be broken into 4-oz. and
1-oz. blocks for rat or mouse placements. Use it indoors and out in bait
stations placed around structures and along rodent runways.
|
 |
Contrac® Rat and Mouse Bait superior meal formulation is ideal to use if there is the possibility
that rodents may transport bait to sensitive areas near food, children or pets.
Meal baits, while the least weatherable bait form, contain food-grade
ingredients, seeds and grains which give rodents a variety of textures and
flavors. Meal bait is available in slender place pacs that keep bait fresh and
free from dirt and contaminants.
|
 |
ZP Rodent Bait, with the active ingredient zinc
phosphide, is a fast way to clean out areas infested with rats, mice and
gophers. Pelleted ZP Rodent Bait is an acute toxicant that kills in one feeding.
It's an excellent choice for quick knock-down, such as down burrows. Zinc
phosphide is not stored in muscle or other tissue of poisoned animals,
alleviating the concern for true secondary poisoning. The odor associated with
ZP is not offensive to rodents but does discourage non-target animals. The zinc
phosphide in Bell's pelleted bait is mixed throughout the pellet for maximum
rodent acceptance. ZP Rodent Bait is economical; teaspoon amounts are equivalent
to 4 oz. of anticoagulant bait.
|
 |
Liqua-Tox is a liquid bait that will kill rats and mice. It contains Diphacinone. Liqua-Tox gives exceptional control under dry conditions or when competition from other food sources is high, such as in grain elevators and food storage warehouses. Rats need water daily and mice will drink when liquids are available. Use in conjunction with our liquid bait station.
|
|
The Quart Rat Fount
is a bait dispenser that releases a steady supply of any liquid bait for rodents. As the rodents drink,
liquid is continuously released in to the bait tray. As you can see, the tray is designed to prevent rodents from
drowning in the bait.
It's constructed of sturdy plastic that offers years of service. The bright red color
is easily seen by forklift drivers and other warehouse personnel. A silver label on the body warns that the fount
contains poisons harmful to children and pets.
| |
Ramik is a slow-acting, all-weather bait for rats and mice. It is formulated with multiple grains, sweeteners and fish flavorings for high acceptance. It is in a nugget form and should be used within our Rat Fortress bait station to prevent children and pets from accessing it. Slow-acting baits encourage rats to leave the house and look for water.
| |
Fastrac Place Pack is a packaged pelleted bait containing Bromethalin. It kills rats and mice in one or two days, often within 24 hours! As an added plus, rodents stop feeding after eating a lethal dose, saving you money and bait. More rats and mice can be controlled with less bait. The slender place packs can be used in bait stations along rodent runways and in hard-to-reach locations. Packs can be opened also and loose pellets poured down burrows. For mice, we also offer Fastrac Mouse Seed.

The bait of choice in the pest control industry, Bell's patented All-Weather
BLOX are manufactured from Bell's unique extrusion process that yields a hard,
multiple-edged bait with the palatability of a meal bait and the weatherability
of a paraffinized bait.
BLOX get unsurpassed rodent acceptance and control. The multiple edges
appeal to a rodent's desire to gnaw and BLOX are made with food-grade ingredients
and small amounts of paraffin for a highly palatable bait. BLOX work well in
any condition -- wet or dry, indoors or out. A hole in the center of the BLOX lets
technicians place it on bait securing rods in bait stations, or nail or wire it in place.

Just One Bite is a fast-acting, all-weather bait in a block form. Each block can be broken up into 2 oz. chunks. This is the best bait for a quick knockdown of a rat infestation. It contains Bromadialone, an anticoagulant that works on roof rats, Norway rats and mice after a single feeding. Death is delayed 4 to 5 days to prevent bait shyness. Should be used with our Rat Fortress bait station to prevent access by children and pets.
